MS Academic Resource Center

The Middle School Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides support for students with learning differences and/or ADHD to maximize their potential for success within the TCA curriculum.

Accommodations May Include:

50% extended time on tests and quizzes
Preferential seating
Use of audiobooks for textbooks and required readings
Spelling accommodations
Oral reading of directions and test questions as needed
Provide access to teacher notes as needed
Use of a computer for test essays and in-class essays

Grades 5/6

Tier One:

Students receive classroom accommodations
ARC offers 50% extended time on assessments
ARC monitors grades and teaches Executive Functioning Skills
Daily supervised study hall period in the 5/6 ARC
ARC interfaces with teachers on behalf of students

Tier Two:

Students receive classroom accommodations
ARC offers 50% extended time on assessments
ARC monitors grades

Applying for the Middle School ARC

If a student is struggling academically and a learning difference is confirmed with a complete battery of psychoeducational testing, placement in the ARC program may be appropriate. Testing must be current within three years. Although a diagnostician may recommend any number of accommodations, TCA has determined which accommodations fit the academic mission of the school.

How to Apply

Students receive accommodations through the Academic Resource Center. Applications and documentation should be submitted to Jenni Mikeska in the Middle School ARC. Soon after, the Student Support Team, consisting of an administrator, a school counselor and an ARC teacher, reviews the documentation, considers faculty input and determines if a student meets the criteria to receive school accommodations. All requests for accommodations must be approved through the Student Support Team.

If a student qualifies for educational accommodations, they can begin receiving services through the ARC. A Student Education Plan will be developed by the ARC teachers and shared with relevant faculty.

Current TCA eighth-graders enrolled in the Middle School ARC must reapply in the spring of their eighth-grade year to be considered for enrollment in the Upper School ARC.
